There were no fanfares, no speeches offered and most importantly for me no tears. When I left Vauxhalls 18 years ago I found it very difficult to control my emotions. When I say I found it very difficult, what I actually mean is I cried on tap on the G of goodbye. Looking back now I was going through a difficult time in my life and although I detested working there. I think maybe, somehow the routine, the same faces everyday, the boring monotony of the job was a safe haven from my life outside work which was complicated.
So, why no tears after 16 years service in a job I thoroughly enjoyed, working with some of the most amazing postmen and women whom I can proudly call my friends. Well the truth is working for the company I was working for has become intolerable from unachievable workloads, to prioritising particular parcels (generally flip flops, clothes or slippers etc) over priority mail (hospital appointments, test results etc). Every post person I know would prefer to be delivering customers priority mail. But, managers are rewarded with bonuses for delivering tracked items on time. Every daily instruction is deliver what mail you can but do not bring any tracked items back. On top of that new employees working through agencies are on 75p an hour more than your trusted and experienced postman or postwoman, despite the fact that the hierarchy in the company saying they cant afford to give anything close to an inflation based wage rise. I could go on, but it's time for change.
Strangely though I am going to end this by thanking my former employers for giving me the knowledge and experience I have obtained, and for giving me this opportunity to revolutionise postal delivery in Wirral and hopefully beyond.
From Monday (10/7/23) leaflets will be dropping in selected areas mainly for businesses and there will be a huge percentage of you that will not find my business useful for your business, but you might know someone who might benefit from Local Postal Solutions and I would be most grateful if you could pass the leaflet on to them.
Hopefully next week I might learn how to post a picture to go with these blogs and I promise that they will become more light-hearted.
Not just a postman.
